About the Conference

The International Ferro Alloys Conference (IFAC), the flagship event of the Indian Ferro alloys Producers’ Association (IFAPA), is an annual conclave witnessing the congregation of the entire ferro alloys industry on one podium. The pivotal theme of IFAC 2024 to be held in 17th – 19th September 2024, is green industrial transition and the pressing need to decarbonise the steel and ferro alloys industries.

Building on the success of IFAC 2022 held in Goa from 5th to 7th September 2022, which saw over 450 delegates representing more than 270 organisations and 50+ international delegates from 18 countries, the upcoming edition of IFAC 2024 seeks to stimulate discussion on sustainable practices in ferroalloys production, spotlighting the role of low-carbon energy and strategies for reducing the industry’s GHG footprint.

IFAC 2024 will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions and technical sessions on the evolving dynamics of global steel and ferro alloys production, the emerging supply scenario of manganese and chrome ore mining globally, India’s efforts at attaining self-sufficiency in raw materials production and possible import-substitution strategies, domestic and global stainless steel demand and the projected surge in demand for alloys, the PLI scheme and its impact on production of specialty steels and ferroalloys, emerging export opportunities, burgeoning domestic power surcharges and their detrimental impact on the industry and, of course, technological interventions required to reduce the industry’s CO2 footprint.

IFAC 2024 seeks to spearhead innovation and sustainable growth, with particular emphasis on enhancing the global presence of the India through adoption of best-practices to drive the low-carbon transition of the domestic industry amid exponential increase in capacity expansion.

The Data Story

The International Ferro Alloys Conference 2024

India’s crude steel production surged 13% y-o-y in FY’24 reaching 144 Mnt. This growth was fuelled primarily by a 25% y-o-y rise in steel production through the IF route, while the EAF-based mills witnessed production growth of 12% y-o-y, not to mention moderate growth recorded by the primary mills. Growth in steel output naturally boosted demand for manganese alloys much needed in final steel production for churning out grades that meet stringent quality specifications. Domestic capacity expansion in manganese alloys seems to be propelling demand for ore.

India’s manganese alloys exports remained nearly stable y-o-y to 1.76 mnt in FY24. A decrease in exports to Italy, Japan, UAE, and Turkey was balanced by an increase in exports to Egypt, the Netherlands, Taiwan, and Indonesia, maintaining the stability of India’s manganese alloys export
volume in FY24.

India’s manganese ore consumption witnessed a significant increase of over 18% y-o-y in FY’24 reaching 8.85 mnt, driven by robust demand. India’s manganese ore output is expected to have risen by around 16% y-o-y to 3.4 mnt in FY’24

In FY24, India’s ferro chrome production remained steady at 1.7 mnt, driven by an increase in demand to 0.8 mnt, correlating with a rise in stainless steel production to 3.7 mnt. This trend is expected to
continue, supported by heightened demand in sectors such as railways, process industries, architecture,
and construction, which is projected to push ferro chrome production to 1.8 mnt and stainless steel
demand to 3.8 mnt in FY25.

About IFAPA

The Indian Ferro Alloys Producers Association (IFAPA) stands as a prominent organization dedicated to representing the interests of ferro alloys producers in India. Established in 1961 with the aim of promoting and safeguarding the collective interests of the ferro alloys industry, IFAPA plays a vital role in advocating for policies that foster the growth and sustainability of the sector.

Initially founded with five members and Sir A. Ramaswami Mudaliar as the Founder Chairman, IFAPA has since expanded its membership to include over 80 members, encompassing nearly all major ferro alloys producers both bulk and noble.

IFAPA serves as a platform for collaboration among industry stakeholders, facilitating the exchange of ideas, sharing of knowledge, and addressing common challenges faced by the industry in general and its members in particular.

Engaging with government bodies, regulatory authorities, and other relevant stakeholders, IFAPA actively works to influence policies, regulations, and standards affecting the ferro alloys industry. Through its initiatives, IFAPA aims to bolster the competitiveness of Indian ferro alloys producers, promote innovation, and ensure the industry’s contribution to economic development and industrial progress, in alignment with the vision of the Honourable Prime Minister of India for a continuous progress on achieving the vision for ‘Viksit Bharat.’

IFAPA is also an active member of prominent industry bodies such as CII, ASSOCHAM, and FICCI, participating actively in all related forums.
